West Nile Virus Cases Surge in Long Beach to Highest Level in 12 Years
Long Beach has now reported 21 West Nile virus cases in 2026, including 16 hospitalizations, as health officials warn mosquito activity could continue through early fall.

Long Beach is experiencing its highest number of human West Nile virus cases in more than a decade, with cases continuing to climb as the city enters the time of year when infections typically peak.
As of Sept. 3, the Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services has reported 21 confirmed and probable human cases of West Nile virus this year.
That’s the highest number recorded in Long Beach since 2014, when the city reported 56 cases.
16 People Have Been Hospitalized
Of the 21 cases reported this year, 16 people have been hospitalized.
Fifteen cases have involved neuroinvasive disease, a serious form of West Nile virus that affects the brain or nervous system. No deaths have been reported in Long Beach this year.
The average age among people who have tested positive is 66.
The increase has happened quickly. On Aug. 28, the Health Department reported 16 cases. By Sept. 3, that number had risen to 21.
Long Beach Had Just One Case Last Year
The number of cases this year is significantly higher than what Long Beach has experienced in recent years.
The city recorded only one case in 2025, no cases in 2024, one in 2023 and four in 2022.
The last year Long Beach recorded more cases than it has so far in 2026 was 2014, when 56 cases were reported.
Health Officials Warn West Nile Season Isn’t Over
West Nile virus is transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. Most people who become infected do not develop symptoms, but the virus can cause fever, headaches, body aches, vomiting or a rash. In rare cases, the illness can become severe and affect the brain and nervous system.
Long Beach health officials say West Nile virus cases typically peak in September and expect activity to continue through early fall.
Residents are being urged to use mosquito repellent, wear long sleeves and pants around dawn and dusk, repair damaged window and door screens, and remove standing water around their homes.
The Health Department is continuing mosquito surveillance and control efforts throughout Long Beach as officials monitor the increase in cases.
