Long Beach Students Caught in Statewide Data Breach

Long Beach Unified warns families after student information was stolen from a company handling California’s standardized tests, with some records potentially dating back nearly 20 years.

Long Beach Unified School District (LBUSD) is warning families about a statewide data breach involving Educational Testing Service (ETS), a company that supports California’s standardized testing programs. According to the California Department of Education, an unauthorized person accessed an ETS file-transfer system and copied student information, potentially affecting current and former students across the state.

What Information Was Stolen?

The compromised information may include student names, birth dates, home addresses, demographics, participation in educational programs, and standardized test results. Some records could date back to 2006, meaning former students who attended California schools nearly 20 years ago could also be affected. Officials say Social Security numbers, financial information, passwords, and parent or guardian information were not involved.

How Did This Happen?

The unauthorized access reportedly took place between May 22 and September 18, 2026, through a system operated by ETS rather than Long Beach Unified’s own computer network. While the breach has been confirmed, the total number of affected students remains unclear, including how many current or former LBUSD students may have had their information compromised.

What Long Beach Families Should Know

LBUSD notified families on October 17 and says it is monitoring the situation for updates. ETS is contacting affected students and families directly and offering two years of free identity-protection services. Parents are encouraged to watch for official notifications and remain cautious of suspicious messages requesting personal information.

Additional information is available through the California Department of Education’s ETS Incident
