More California College Students Can Now Qualify for CalFresh Benefits

New eligibility rules could help thousands of students receive up to $306 a month for groceries, including those attending LBCC and Cal State Long Beach.

California has expanded CalFresh eligibility for college students, making it easier for more students to receive monthly grocery assistance.

Under the updated rules, qualifying students enrolled at least half-time in eligible college programs no longer have to meet the traditional 20-hour weekly work requirement to satisfy the student eligibility rules.

Students must still meet income and other eligibility requirements. CalFresh benefits are provided through an EBT card and can be used to purchase groceries at participating stores.

The changes could make a difference for students struggling with rising food, housing, and tuition costs.
