Sauler’s Cajun Nation, One of Long Beach’s Hidden Seafood Spots
There’s a good chance you’ve driven past Sauler’s Cajun Nation without ever realizing it was there.
Emily Nguyen
Tucked away near the corner of Third Street and Loma Avenue, surrounded by a mostly residential neighborhood, the small pickup spot doesn’t exactly announce itself. There’s currently no big storefront sign directing you toward king crab, lobster tails, shrimp and Cajun-style seafood boils.
But once you know it’s there, it’s hard to forget.
Sauler’s Cajun Nation is the work of owner Steven Sauler, a Filipino immigrant who has turned something he’s been doing for years into a growing Long Beach business.
And according to Steven, much of that journey really took off during the pandemic.
From Facebook Marketplace to a Long Beach Business
When restaurants and businesses shut down during the pandemic, people found new ways to buy and sell just about everything. For Steven, Facebook Marketplace became an unexpected opportunity.
He began posting the seafood boils he was making, and people started ordering.
Then they came back.
Word spread, more people discovered his food, and what started on a much smaller scale continued to grow.
Steven said he has been making this type of food for years, but the response he received during the pandemic showed him there was a real audience for it.
Today, Sauler’s Cajun Nation has a permanent home in Long Beach.
A Seafood Spot Hidden in a Neighborhood
Part of what makes Sauler’s Cajun Nation interesting is the location itself.
You won’t find it inside a large shopping center or along a row of restaurants. It operates out of a small commercial space at 301 Loma Ave., Suite B, near Third Street and Loma Avenue.
At the moment, it’s incredibly easy to miss.
There isn’t prominent signage outside yet, something Steven hopes will change as the necessary permitting and details with the property are worked out. Since he rents the space, some of those decisions extend beyond the restaurant itself.
For now, knowing the address is important.
Sauler’s Cajun Nation operates as a pickup spot, with customers able to place their orders ahead of time and pick up their food from the location.
In a strange way, the lack of visibility adds to the feeling that you’ve stumbled across an actual Long Beach hidden gem.
King Crab, Lobster, Shrimp and Plenty of Cajun Flavor
The food is the reason people found Steven in the first place.
Sauler’s Cajun Nation specializes in seafood boils loaded with combinations of king crab, lobster tails, shrimp, mussels, corn, potatoes and other seafood, all covered in the rich, seasoned flavors you expect from a Cajun-style boil.
It’s messy, saucy and definitely not the kind of meal you eat delicately.
The portions are generous, and everything we tried was delicious.
There’s also a Filipino influence behind the business, something Sauler’s Cajun Nation proudly describes as a touch of Cajun with Filipino soul.
How to Order From Sauler’s Cajun Nation
For now, Sauler’s Cajun Nation is a takeout operation, so don’t head over expecting a traditional sit-down restaurant.
Orders can be placed ahead of time for pickup.
