A shooting in Downtown Long Beach early Tuesday morning set off a series of events that eventually led to a police pursuit, gunfire on the 710 Freeway, and a crash miles away in Los Angeles.

The Long Beach Police Department is now investigating both the original shooting and the officer-involved shooting that occurred during the pursuit on September 1.

Here’s how police say it all unfolded.

Shooting on Aquarium Way

At approximately 12:24 a.m., Long Beach police officers responded to the 200 block of Aquarium Way regarding a shooting involving multiple victims.

When officers arrived, they found three adult men with injuries. Two were transported to a hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening, while the third was treated at the scene.

Police have not released the identities of the three men or provided details about what led to the shooting. The circumstances and motive remain under investigation.

Police Locate a Suspect

According to LBPD, officers quickly identified a possible suspect and a vehicle believed to be connected to the shooting. Police later located the vehicle near Burnett Street and Pacific Avenue with the male suspect inside.

Officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but police say the suspect refused to stop, leading to a vehicle pursuit.

Suspect Allegedly Fires at Officers on the 710 Freeway

The pursuit eventually made its way onto the northbound 710 Freeway. During the chase, LBPD says the suspect fired shots toward pursuing officers. An officer-involved shooting then occurred.

Police have not yet released the full details surrounding the exchange or how many shots were fired. LBPD says the suspect was not struck by gunfire, and no officers were injured.

Pursuit Ends With Crash in Los Angeles

Despite the gunfire on the freeway, the pursuit continued into the city of Los Angeles.

The chase eventually came to an end when the suspect’s vehicle crashed into a pole. Officers then used a 40mm less-lethal weapon while taking the suspect into custody.

Police recovered a firearm following the incident.

The suspect was transported to a hospital for injuries related to the vehicle collision. His identity has not been released.

Investigation Continues

LBPD says officers involved in the incident were equipped with body-worn cameras, and the department is currently reviewing the footage. Police said the footage will be released to the public as soon as possible.

The department will also conduct a multi-level review of the officer-involved shooting.

Meanwhile, investigators are still working to determine what led to the original shooting on Aquarium Way and the circumstances surrounding it.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Long Beach Police Department detectives at 562-570-7244.
