Storm Runoff Prompts Ocean Water Warning in Long Beach
October 14, 2025 — Long Beach, CA
Following this week’s rain, Long Beach health officials have issued a standard 72-hour rain advisory for all city beaches. The warning comes after stormwater runoff washed through local streets, storm drains, and the Los Angeles River, carrying pollutants and debris into the ocean.
While the beaches remain open, residents are advised to avoid swimming, surfing, or any water contact until at least three full days after rainfall ends. Health officials say bacteria levels often rise during this period, increasing the risk of illness for swimmers.
It’s a familiar reminder for longtime locals, but many newer residents are surprised by how quickly the runoff affects water quality. After heavy storms, the water near shore can appear darker and cloudier, with debris sometimes visible along the tide line.
The city routinely monitors coastal water quality and posts updates on its Beach Water Quality webpage.
