Midsummer Scream Will Not Return to Long Beach in 2027
After 10 years in Long Beach, Midsummer Scream is officially moving to Anaheim.
Organizers announced Sunday that the massive Halloween and horror convention will move to the Anaheim Convention Center for its 2027 event, scheduled for August 6–8.
Midsummer Scream launched in Long Beach in 2016 with around 8,000 attendees. A decade later, the event welcomed more than 50,000 people this past weekend, becoming one of the largest Halloween and horror conventions in the country.
Emily Nguyen
Executive Director and Co-Founder David Markland described leaving Long Beach as “bittersweet,” while pointing to just how much the event has grown over the years.
“The amazing community of Halloween and horror fans continues to grow, and we’re excited to be able to grow with it,” Markland said.
We attended Midsummer Scream this past weekend, and firsthand, it was easy to see why more space is needed.
The Long Beach Convention Center is a great venue, but Midsummer Scream has reached a size where parts of the convention felt extremely overcrowded. At certain points, simply walking through some of the vendor areas and main walkways was difficult.
The heat was noticeable too. Despite being indoors, several areas were uncomfortably warm, and the air conditioning appeared to struggle to keep up with the massive crowds throughout the weekend.
That’s not necessarily a knock on the convention center. Midsummer Scream has simply become a huge event, and accommodating more than 50,000 attendees, hundreds of vendors, panels, attractions and the Hall of Shadows requires a lot of space.
The Anaheim Convention Center gives organizers significantly more room to work with as Midsummer Scream continues to grow.
A Big Loss for Long Beach
While the move may make sense for Midsummer Scream, losing the convention is still a significant loss for Long Beach.
For one weekend every year, tens of thousands of horror fans descend on Downtown Long Beach. Many stay at nearby hotels, eat at local restaurants, visit bars and spend money at businesses surrounding the convention center.
After a decade of that activity coming to Downtown Long Beach, much of it will now shift to Anaheim beginning next year.
Long Beach Will Still Get a Spooky Event
There is at least some good news for local horror fans.
Midsummer Scream organizers also announced that Season’s Screamings, their Christmas-meets-Halloween convention, will come to the Long Beach Convention Center in December 2027.
Season’s Screamings was previously held at the Pasadena Convention Center in 2021 and combines the horror convention experience with the holiday season.
It remains to be seen how large the Long Beach version will become, and it shouldn’t necessarily be viewed as a direct replacement for Midsummer Scream. Still, it gives Long Beach something new to look forward to and keeps a connection between the event organizers and the city.
After 10 years, Midsummer Scream’s time in Long Beach is coming to an end. But considering just how much the convention has grown since its first year here, the move to Anaheim may simply be the next chapter for an event that became much bigger than anyone could have imagined back in 2016.
