Student Device Use Changes Today Across Long Beach Schools
Beginning Monday, January 26, 2026, new restrictions on student use of personal and wearable electronic devices are now in effect across all Long Beach Unified School District schools. The updated policy limits when students may use phones and other devices during the school day and applies to cell phones, smartwatches, smart glasses, earbuds, headphones, and cameras.
Under the new rules, restrictions vary by grade level. For students in transitional kindergarten through fifth grade and grades six through eight, devices must be powered off and stored in backpacks or bags for the entire school day. Once students arrive on campus, devices must remain off and out of sight during all school hours, including before and after school extended learning programs. For high school students in grades nine through twelve, devices must be powered off and stored during instructional time, meaning from the beginning to the end of each class period, with specific rules outside of class varying by school site. Across all grade levels, devices must remain stored while students are using restrooms or participating in field trips or work based learning activities during the school day.
Although the policy places limits on device use, it is not a complete ban. Students may still use or possess devices in cases of emergency or in response to a perceived threat of danger. Administrators may grant permission for device use under certain conditions, and students may carry or use devices when required for medical reasons or when specified in an individualized education program or 504 plan.
Each school is responsible for creating its own enforcement plan, and consequences may include secure storage, confiscation, parent contact, or other disciplinary measures. District officials say the goal of the policy is to reduce distractions in the classroom, improve student focus, and support student wellness while still allowing necessary exceptions for safety and individual needs.
Parents and students are encouraged to contact their school for site specific details. More information is available at lbschools.net/phonepolicy.
