Another Homeless Man Arrested for Murder in Long Beach After Deadly Attack

A man initially arrested following an August assault is now accused of murder after the victim died from his injuries weeks later.

A homeless man has been arrested for murder in Long Beach after a man who was critically injured in an August attack died from his injuries weeks later.

The case marks at least the second publicly reported Long Beach homicide this year in which police identified the man accused of the deadly attack as a person experiencing homelessness.

August Attack Turns Into Homicide Investigation

Long Beach police responded to the 1800 block of Long Beach Boulevard at approximately 8:20 p.m. on Aug. 1 after receiving a report of a man with a gun.

When officers arrived, they found an adult male victim who appeared to have been assaulted. Long Beach Fire Department personnel transported the man to a hospital in critical condition.

Police located 49-year-old Zetty Jerome Welch, whom LBPD identified as a person experiencing homelessness, and initially arrested him on suspicion of battery causing serious bodily injury.

Victim Dies Weeks After Attack

The victim remained hospitalized following the assault and died from his injuries on Aug. 31, according to police.

Homicide detectives were notified of the death and continued investigating the case. Welch was subsequently arrested for murder.

Police have not publicly identified the victim pending notification of his next of kin.

Another Deadly Attack Earlier This Year

The case follows another Long Beach homicide earlier this year involving a suspect police identified as experiencing homelessness.

In April, 72-year-old James Plummer was attacked aboard a Metro train near Pacific Avenue. Police arrested 66-year-old Cary Odell Singletary, who was described by LBPD as a person experiencing homelessness.

Plummer died from his injuries several days later, and the case was subsequently investigated as a murder.

The investigation into the latest homicide remains ongoing.
